Former attorney general Soli Sorabjee dies of Covid-19

NEW DELHI: Former attorney general and legal luminary Soli J Sorabjee died of Covid-19 on Friday morning.

He was 91-year-old and is survived by wife, a daughter and two sons.

Sorabjee and his wife had tested positive for Covid-19 some days back, sources said.

While wife was recovering well, Sorabjee succumbed as he had many comorbidities.

Sorabjee was awarded Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award, in the year 2002 for his defence of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights.

A human rights champion of international acclaim, Sorabjee had been a votary of protection of fundamental rights of the last man standing in the socio-economic hierarchy.

Sorabjee was known for his contribution in the field of constitutional law. He had also helped India win in International Court of Justice against Pakistan in the Atlantique downing case of 1999.

Overwhelmed by the 2008 terror strike in Mumbai,  Sorabjee  has ventilated to public anxiety by applying in the SC with the direction to the center to complement and train the police to make them able to handle terrorists and create moods to live protected.
