You can drill a hole in Apple’s AirTag, but Likely should Not

As you have probably heard by now, Apple has its own small monitoring device known as the AirTag, and while its design is slick, it is also lacking a key characteristic: a pit for attaching it to objects.  Apple has accessories which you may buy for procuring the tracker to several items, but iFixit has introduced another — primitive and ill-advised as it’s — method.

IFixit, because it will, opened  that AirTag to have a peek at what makes it tick.  The circle-shaped tracker is easy in character, smaller compared to its rivals out of Tile and Samsung’s SmartTag+, and it packs a user-replaceable battery.

The trade-off for this little form factor is the absence of a keyring hole, which you are going to need to pay additional to defeat by buying one of those companion accessories.  The accessories are visually attractive, but not especially cheap — that the leather keyring, by way of instance, costs $35 USD while Belkin’s keyring is $12.95 USD.

In light of this, you could be tempted to replicate iFixit’s funny (and successful) effort to drill a hole directly through the AirTag.  This DIY hack, since the staff requires it, involved a 1/16-inch drill bit plus incredibly careful placement that was able to prevent the tracker’s sensitive innards.

The group notes that in case you opt to try this on your own, you need to remove the battery for obvious security reasons — and, naturally, remember that you might inadvertently drill into one of the internal elements and destroy the tracker at the procedure.

Remember that drilling to the AirTag will void any warranty you might have andalso, it makes the otherwise trendy accessory appear horrible.
